CROCHET NEWBORN BEANIE: how to crochet a top knot hat for baby newborn, step by step tutorial
Abbreviations:
- Ch = Chain
- SC = Single crochet
- DC = Double crochet
- HDC = Half double crochet
- 2 HDC inc = 2 half double crochet increase
- Rep = Repeat
Hook Size(s): 3.5mm (or 4mm depending on the yarn. Don’t use a yarn that is too thick)
Special Stiches:
Triple Pompom: Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over, insert your hook in the same stitch, yarn over, and insert your hook in the same stitch again for a total of 7 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops.
Pattern for Newborn Beanie:
Foundation Row: start with 2 ch
Round 1: Make 4 HDC in the second ch from the hook. Pull the tail to close the ring. Do not sl st to join. This pattern is worked in rounds. Insert a stitch marker in the first st of each round. (4)
Round 2: Rep *2 HDC inc, 1 HDC* all around. (6)
Round 3: Rep *2 HDC inc, 2 HDC* all around. (8)
Round 4: Rep *2 HDC inc, 3 HDC* all around. (10)
Rounds 5-onward: 1 HDC in each st around. Continue this until the tube is 7-8 cm long. (10)
Round 6: Rep *2 HDC inc, 4 HDC* all around. (12)
Round 7: 1 HDC in each st around. (12)
Round 8: Rep *2 HDC inc, 5 HDC* all around. (14)
Round 9: 1 HDC in each st around. (14)

Round 22: 1 HDC in each st around. Sl st to join.
Round 23: 1 HDC in each st around without joining until the beanie is 12-13 cm long. Make 2-3 sl st at the end.
